To the Flock and to All Concerned Persons,Concerning the Persecution of Christians in Ukraine

Conscience does not permit me to remain silent over the grave and new injustices being wrought in the sacred land of Ukraine, adding sorrow upon sorrows as the grief of war is now conjoined with the tragedy of the most extraordinary and heartless persecution of Christians taking place in many parts of the country. While such persecution has been a reality already for many years, it has reached a pitch in recent days with new injustices being enacted in flagrant violation of Ukrainian law and international conventions on human rights.

In the present season of Great Lent, all Christians are called to examine their hearts and consciences, to discern what is good and what is sinful within themselves and in the world around them. In such a period of tragedy, this is all the more essential. Our position against the war presently being waged between Russia and Ukraine has been clear from the outset: bloodshed is evil, warfare is always a sign of man’s degradation, and the current war, which forces brother to draw his own brother’s blood and pits Orthodox Christians against fellow Orthodox Christians, ought to be opposed by all those of Christian conscience. I renew my appeal for all clergy and faithful of our Diocese of Great Britain and Western Europe to continue in the path of aid that has been exemplified so powerfully amongst you since the war began: continue operating food banks in the parishes, to aid refugees; continue to raise funds and material supplies for those suffering in Ukraine itself; continue to welcome refugees from the war into your communities, homes, schools and hearts; continue to show love and piety towards all who are suffering. Work for peace in all things; pray without ceasing for the bloodshed to end.

Yet we cannot permit the tragedy of war to excuse, or render us blind towards, the appalling persecutions taking place within Ukraine. The Ukrainian Orthodox Church, headed by the pious Metropolitan Onuphry and his brotherhood of faithful hierarchs and clergy, strive for nothing but to worship God in peace and care for all the people of their homeland with open hearts and a simple, powerful faith. Yet in response to their apolitical love, they are receiving the most vicious attacks. Attempts by outside entities to politicise Church life by falsely linking the autonomous Ukrainian Church — which is independent and not under the thumb of any foreign entities — to political, military or state powers abroad is as false as it is malicious; attempts to set up a new ‘Ukrainian’ false Church, under the influence of a patriarchate in Turkey and flagrantly political in orientation, is deceptive and a wound to Christ and His flock. And in the current days, even the peace-loving monks of the Dormition Lavra in Kiev are being threatened with eviction: having already been evicted from one part of the monastery just before the Nativity of Christ, the monks are now threatened with complete expulsion from the monastery grounds by the end of the present month. The incorrupt relics of the saints kept in the monastery — most of whom laboured and toiled spiritually in Ukraine — are being referred to by Government officers as ‘museum exhibitions’; schismatic false-Orthodox individuals are being brought in to desecrate Holy Altars with profane, non-Orthodox rites in mockery of the Church; priests are being evicted from nearby parish churches; peace-loving leaders of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church are being groundlessly, illegally sanctioned; hierarchs are being intimidated with deprivation of citizenship and deportation, seminarians with eviction from their schools and academies, and the faithful with the stripping away of their canonical Church life. 

Brothers and sisters, the last time the world saw such heinous persecution of Christians, the last time we heard such blasphemous words and witnessed the promulgation of such lies and and open hatred, was in the Soviet period — which, I call all to remember, was that of the fiercest persecution against Christians the world has ever witnessed, producing more martyrs for Christ in the twentieth century than in nearly the whole of Christian history before it. Shall the world stand by now, silently, as the same begins again in the twenty-first? Can any human person, whatever his or her personal religious beliefs or political persuasion, claim to stand for peace in the face of war, and at the same time pass over in silence the attacks and evils being undertaken against innocent Christians who have nothing to do with the war, but are being made its victims in even greater degree by persecutions within their own homeland? The monks of the Lavra are not politicians, they are not enemies of any state or any people; they are humble individuals who have chosen a life of self-renunciation in following God, preserving the spiritual heritage of a site that has been sacred to Ukrainian Orthodox Christians — and Orthodox all across the world — for more than a millennium. They pray for all; they care for their fellow countrymen and pilgrims. The rise early in the morning to sing songs of praise to God Who created the world in peace; they stay awake late into the night in long vigils, praying for that peace and the reign of God’s mercy.

I call upon all those with any means of acting, to act in support of those being so unjustly persecuted before the eyes of the whole world. Continue to oppose the war, and join to this goal the earnest need to stop these tragedies. Speak to your political representatives, and make them aware of what is taking place and the need to put an end to it. Telephone your members of parliament, senators and congressmen; speak in contexts where you yourselves can raise the awareness of such matters. Appeal to all and to any who will hear, that peace must reign, freedom of religion must be protected, and the propagandist use of a tragic war to justify additional tragedies cannot be tolerated.

To all pious Christians, above all I exhort you to pray. Pray to our Almighty God that He will work a miracle amongst His pious flock in Ukraine. Pray that He will strengthen Metropolitan Onuphry and all the leaders of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Pray that He will comfort the suffering faithful. Pray that they will feel the support of our love and the openness of our hearts to be united to them in their suffering.

And to the faithful children of this Diocese, I instruct that every parish is to serve a moleben with the Akathist Hymn to the Mother of God — to whose dormition the Kiev Lavra is dedicated — every week with immediate effect, lifting up at its end the prayer for the end of civil strife in the Ukrainian lands. Those faithful who cannot make it into the churches for the service should pray it in their homes, in front of their holy icons, with their family and children gathered around them. Those who can do so every day, should make this sacrifice for our brethren. And on Wednesday 29th March, the day on which the Ukrainian state has said it will enforce its eviction of the monks from the Lavra and on which the Church especially repents through the recitation of the Great Canon of St Andrew, every parish is to serve a moleben to all the saints of the Kiev-Caves Lavra, with the prayer offered on bended knee; and every faithful Christian should be encouraged to fast strictly for the entire day. By prayer and fasting, the good intentions of the pious shall be heard by our loving God.

May God save His people, and bless His inheritance!

Совесть не позволяет мне молчать о тяжких и новых беззакониях, творимых на священной земле Украины, которые прибавляют печаль к печали. Ибо скорбь войны соединилась ныне с трагедией необыкновеннейших и бессердечнейших гонений на христиан, происходящих во многих уголках страны. Хотя такие преследования были реальностью уже много лет, в последние дни они достигли своего очередного апогея, когда новые беззакония совершаются с грубым нарушением украинского законодательства и международных конвенций по правам человека.

В текущее Великопостное время все христиане призваны испытывать свое сердце и совесть, различая в себе доброе и также греховное — и более ясно воспринимать то же самое в окружающем их мире. Наипаче же это необходимо в нынешнее трагическое время. Наша позиция против войны, которая сейчас ведется между Россией и Украиной, с самого начала была ясна: кровопролитие есть зло, война есть всегда признак деградации человека, а нынешней войне, которая заставляет брата проливать кровь своего брата и стравливает православных христиан против единоверцев-православных, должны противостоять все добропорядочные христиане. Ко всем священнослужителям и верующим нашей Великобританской и Западно-Европейской епархии я вновь обращаюсь с призывом продолжать путь помощи, который так сильно проявился среди вас с начала войны: для поддержки беженцев продлевать в приходах работу продовольственных банков; не останавливать сбор средств и материалов для пострадавших в самой Украине. Продолжайте принимать беженцев с войны в свои общины, дома, школы и сердца; продолжайте проявлять любовь и благочестие ко всем страждущим. Стремитесь к миру во всем; непрестанно молитесь, чтобы прекратилось кровопролитие.

Тем не менее, мы не можем допустить, чтобы трагедия войны оправдывала или делала нас слепыми к ужасающим преследованиям, происходящим в Украине. Украинская Православная Церковь, возглавляемая благочестивым митрополитом Онуфрием и его собратьями – верными архиереями и духовенством, ни к чему иному не стремится, кроме мирного поклонения Богу и заботы обо всех людях своей родины с открытым сердцем и простой, твердой верой. Однако в ответ на свою аполитичную любовь они подвергаются самым жестоким гонениям. Попытки внешних субъектов политизировать церковную жизнь, ложно связывая самоуправляемую Украинскую Православную Церковь — которая независима и не находится под контролем каких-либо иностранных образований — с политическими, военными или государственными силами за границей, столь же лживы, сколь и злонамеренны. Под влиянием патриархата из Турции попытки создать ложную «украинскую» Церковь, с откровенно политической направленностью, вводят многих в заблуждение и ранят Христа и Его паству. В нынешние дни даже миролюбивым монахам Свято-Успенской Киево-Печерской Лавры угрожают выселением: невзирая на выдворение насельников из верхней части монастыря, совершенное накануне Рождества Христова, монахам Лавры теперь грозит полное изгнание с ее территории до конца текущего месяца. Хранящиеся в обители реликвии и нетленные мощи святых, большинство из которых духовно подвизались и молились на территории современной Украины, чиновники именуют «музейными экспонатами». Раскольнические лжеправославные личности привлекаются для осквернения святых алтарей нечестивыми, неправославными обрядами в насмешку над Церковью. Священников изгоняют из близлежащих приходских церквей. Безосновательно, незаконно подвергаются санкциям стремящиеся к миру иерархи Украинской Православной Церкви. Архиереям угрожают лишением гражданства и высылкой, семинаристам — выдворением из школ и академий, а верующим — лишением Канонической церковной жизни.

Возлюбленные братья и сестры! Последний раз, когда мир видел подобное гнусное преследование христиан, последний раз, когда мы слышали такие богохульные изречения и были свидетелями распространения такой откровенной лжи и ненависти, был советский период, который, я призываю всех вспомнить. Это было самым свирепым гонением на христиан, которое когда-либо видел мир, в результате чего в ХХ столетии было совершено истребление мучеников за Христа больше, чем почти за всю предшествовавшую историю Христианства. Должен ли мир теперь стоять молча в стороне, когда то же самое начинается вновь в веке ХХI-м? Может ли какой-либо человек, какими бы ни были его личные религиозные или политические убеждения, заявлять, что он отстаивает мир перед лицом войны, и в то же время умалчивать о нападениях и злодеяниях, совершаемых против невинных христиан, которые не имеют ничего общего с войной, но становятся ее жертвами в еще большей степени, подвергаясь гонениям на собственной родине? Монахи Лавры не политики, не враги ни государства, ни народа; это смиренные люди, которые избрали жизнь самоотречения в следовании за Богом, сохраняя духовное наследие места, которое более тысячелетия было священным для православных христиан Украины  и православных христиан всего мира. Молясь за всех, заботясь о земляках и паломниках, поднимаясь рано утром, чтобы петь хвалебные песни Богу, сотворившему миру мир; они бодрствуют до поздней ночи в долгих бдениях, молясь об этом мире и Царстве Божьего милосердия.  

Я призываю всех, у кого есть какие-либо средства для воздействия, выступить в поддержку тех, кого так несправедливо преследуют на глазах всего мира. Продолжайте противостоять войне и присоединяйтесь к высокой цели остановить эту трагедию. Поговорите со своими политическими представителями и дайте им знать о том, что происходит, и о необходимости положить этому конец. Позвоните своим членам парламента, сенаторам и конгрессменам; говорите в контексте, в котором вы сами можете привлечь внимание к таким вопросам. Взывайте во вся и ко всем, кто услышит, что должен воцариться мир, свобода вероисповедания должна быть защищена, а пропагандистское использование трагической войны для оправдания новых трагедий является недопустимым!

Всех благочестивых христиан я, прежде всего, призываю молиться. Умолим нашего Всемогущего Господа, чтобы Он сотворил чудо среди Своей благочестивой паствы в Украине. Молитесь, чтобы Он укрепил митрополита Онуфрия и всех иерархов Украинской Православной Церкви. Молитесь, чтобы Он утешил страждущих. Молитесь, чтобы пребывающие в притеснениях верующие почувствовали поддержку нашей любви и открытость наших сердец, чтобы соединиться с ними в их страданиях.  

Всем верным чадам нашей Епархии благословляется еженедельно в каждом приходе незамедлительно совершать молебен с Акафистом Божией Матери, Успению Которой посвящена Киевская Лавра, вознося в конце молитву о прекращении междоусобиц на украинской земле. Те верующие, которые не могут попасть в храмы на службу, призываются молиться у себя дома перед святыми иконами, в кругу семьи и детей. Те, кто может делать это каждый день, должны принести сию жертву за наших братьев. В среду, 29 марта, в день, когда украинское государство назначило выселение монахов из Лавры и в который Церковь особо раскаивается чтением Великого Покаянного канона св. Андрея Критского, каждый приход должен отслужить молебен Отцам Печерским с коленопреклоненной молитвой. Следует поощрять каждого верующего к держанию строгого поста в течение всего дня. Молитвой и постом добрые намерения благочестивых христиан да будут услышаны нашим любящим Господом.

Archpriest Serafim Gan says order for Ukrainian Orthodox Church monks to leave iconic Kiev Monastery is a “Flagrant Violation”. | Протоиерей Серафим Ган: «Требования украинских властей к монахам Киево-Печерской Лавры покинуть свою обитель является грубым нарушением их свобод».

WASHINGTON, March 14 (Sputnik) – The requirement of the Ukrainian authorities for the monks of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) to leave the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, one of the most revered sites in Orthodox Christianity, represents a brazen violation of their rights and freedoms, the chancellor of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad (ROCOR) Synod of Bishops told Sputnik.

On Friday, the National Kiev-Pechersk Historical and Cultural Preserve ordered the monks of the UOC to leave the site by March 29 after an interdepartmental commission registered an alleged violation of the terms of the agreement on the use of state property by the monastery. Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia addressed religious and international leaders with a message about the situation surrounding the 11th-century monastery. The patriarch called the decision by Ukrainian officials repressive.

“Of course, this is a flagrant violation of the rights and freedoms of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Seizures of cathedrals, threats and all kinds of persecution have been going on now for years,” archpriest Serafim Gan told Sputnik.

Founded in 1051, Kiev-Pechersk Lavra is one of the first Russian Orthodox monasteries and among the holiest sites in Orthodox Christianity, housing many architectural and holy relics. Until the end of 2022, jurisdiction over the Lavra had been divided between Ukraine’s National Kiev-Pechersk Historical and Cultural Preserve and the UOC.

Gan underscored that politicians cannot intervene in church affairs. “They can provide help, they can even express their thoughts and their opinion on different issues, or share their desires. However, they cannot dictate the Church on how it should do in its internal life,” he added.

The Church has its own legislation – the sacred canons and rules. “The UOC is acting in accordance with these rules,” the archpriest stated.

Since the beginning of Russia’s special military operation, the Ukrainian authorities have intensified their crackdown on the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. In January this year, the Ukrainian government submitted a bill with the parliament to ban the activities of “Russia-affiliated” religious organizations in the country.

The ROCOR clergy and the flock are praying for the UOC and for peace to be restored, Gan also said.

“We hope that Great Lent and our penitential feat during these Holy days will help to incline the mercy of God to the UOC and to all of us. We especially pray for the brethren of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, for the students of the Kiev theological schools, for the inhabitants of the Lavra who are forced to leave its borders,” he added.

Gan pointed out that despite the difficult situation the UOC finds itself in, it nevertheless continues to provide more humanitarian aid to refugees and to members of the Ukrainian military forces than any other religious organization in the country.

In Chernivtsi region’s Banchen monastery alone, the brotherhood of the Holy Ascension has supported more than 5,000 refugees, while other convents and churches are also are helping people in need, Gan said.

“That is why, such an attitude on the part of the government toward the UOC is more than unfair,” Gan added.

Требования властей Украины к насельникам Киево-Печерской Лавры являются грубым нарушением их прав и религиозных свобод, заявил РИА Новостям управляющий делами канцелярии Архиерейского Синода Русской Зарубежной Церкви протоиерей Серафим Ган, секретарь ее Первоиерарха.

«Конечно, это грубое нарушение прав и свобод Украинской Православной Церкви. Захваты храмов, угрозы и всякого рода притеснения происходят уже годами», сказал отец Серафим.

Национальный заповедник “Киево-Печерская Лавра” 10 марта обязал монахов канонической Украинской Православной Церкви (УПЦ) покинуть принадлежащие ему здания до 29 марта. Украинская межведомственная рабочая группа по подготовке предложений и рекомендаций по организации выполнения отдельных задач, связанных с деятельностью религиозных организаций, установила нарушение монастырем условий договора по использованию государственного имущества. Содержание и детали нарушений комиссия не привела. На фоне этого в понедельник митрополит Винницкой епархии канонической УПЦ Варсонофий сообщил, что на территорию Киево-Печерской Лавры без предупреждения и документов прибыла комиссия с проверкой.

Отец Серафим подчеркнул, что политики не должны вмешиваться в решение церковных вопросов. «Они могут оказывать помощь, они могут даже выражать свои мысли, свое отношение к различным вопросам, высказывать свои пожелания. Но они не могут диктовать Церкви, как ей решать ее вопросы. Эти вопросы решаются церковными путями, и у нас в Церкви есть свое законодательство – священные каноны и церковные правила. Украинская Православная Церковь действует по этому своду правил», – сказал он.

По его словам, священники, монашествующие и прихожане Русской Зарубежной Церкви молятся за Украинскую Православную Церковь и за восстановление мира. «Мы надеемся, что Великий пост и наш покаянный подвиг в эти святые дни поможет преклонить и к Украинской Православной Церкви, и ко всем нам милость Божию. Мы особенно молимся за братию Киево-Печерской Лавры, за студентов Киевских Духовных школ, за всех насельников Лавры, которые вынуждены покинуть ее пределы», отметил отец Серафим.

Он подчеркнул, что Украинская Православная Церковь больше всех остальных религиозных организаций на территории Украины помогала беженцам и переселенцам, а также украинской армии. В частности, по его словам, монахи Спасо-Вознесенского Банченского монастыря помогают пяти тысячам переселенцам, другие обители и приходы также оказывают поддержку нуждающимся. «Поэтому, таковое отношение со стороны правительства – это более, чем несправедливо», сказал священник.

A prayer service for the health and salvation of His Beatitude Metropolitan Onouphry and the archpastors, clergy, monastics and flock of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church

On Tuesday, 14 March, 2023, His Grace Bishop Luke of Syracuse performed a moleben (service of supplication) in the Church of St Job, Abbot and Miracle-worker of Pochaev, at Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, NY. The divine service was performed before a holy item especially venerated at the monastery, a reliquary containing remains of saints of Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. His Grace was joined by the monastic brethren as well as teachers and students of Holy Trinity Seminary in clerical rank.

Bishop Luke then called upon everyone to bolster their prayers and fasting in hope of bringing Divine mercy to the Church and the Orthodox faithful.

Clergy Conference of the Chicago and Mid-America Diocese Issues Resolution Supporting the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and the Orthodox Stand on Contemporary Moral Issues

At the meeting of the southern deanery of the Diocese of Chicago and Mid-America, the clergy under the omofor of Archbishop Peter gathered in lenten retreat. During their meetings, they produced a Resolution in which their unwavering support for the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church under His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry was reiterated. In the same text, the clergy also reiterated the need to stand fast for the moral positions of the Holy Orthodox Church in the face of societal activities.

San Antonio Lenten Clergy Retreat 2023: Resolution

Having gathered in the divinely protected city of San Antonio, Texas at the parish of Sts. Joachim and Anna, we give thanks to God for the opportunity to join in prayer before the miraculous Kursk Root Icon of the Theotokos. With the blessing of Vladyka Peter, we take this time to pray for our flock and discuss the issues that impact our diocese and the Orthodox world.

As the war in Ukraine continues, our diocese remains vigilant in supporting His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry in his struggle for peace and the safety of the canonical Church. Metropolitan Onuphry has directed his flock to follow a simple daily prayer rule consisting of Psalms 45 and 90, 12 prostrations, and the Lord’s Prayer. Vladyka Peter asks that in support of the Ukrainian church, we consider adopting this prayer rule to show solidarity with those suffering in Ukraine. In addition to the prayers we offer for Metropolitan Onuphry and his flock, we continue to offer financial support. Vladyka Peter encourages that we all write to our government representatives, voicing our support for the canonical Church in Ukraine and our disagreement with the American government’s support for the schismatic church.

Furthermore, modern culture forces the acceptance of gender and sexuality contrary to nature. We believe that the Orthodox Church has a living tradition that positively impacts the lives of those suffering with gender dysphoria and disordered sexual passions. We emphasize that the Orthodox Church is a spiritual hospital open to all that are seeking healing and love that can only be found in Christ. Vladyka Peter encourages all parents to guide and protect their children so they are not deceived by the modern world but instead are brought up in the truth of Christ’s teachings. Vladyka stresses the critical role parents play in the development of young children. They are the first teachers and must set a positive example in their upbringing.

Additionally, the Diocesan Assembly has increased the financial and material support of Vladyka Peter. We appreciate and value the continued love and dedication he shows to his flock. This increase allows Vladyka further ability to tend the parishes in our diocese. The Diocesan Assembly also laid the foundation for a future vicar bishop to assist with diocesan responsibilities.

Finally, we as clergy discussed the importance of supporting chaplains in pursuit of upholding a moral presence within the military. We encourage any clergymen who are interested in this calling to speak with Fr. Christopher Allen, the Dean of Chaplaincy for our diocese. This opportunity is both a wonderful ministry to the faithful as well as a viable career for supporting a clergy family.

Western American Diocese Supports Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine’s Lenten Rule for Peace.

At the beginning of Great Lent, the head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, His Beatitude Metropolitan Onufry of Kiev & All Ukraine, called upon and blessed the faithful to fulfil a special rule of prayer for peace. The rule is as follows: throughout the fast read the 45th and 90th Psalms, do 12 full prostrations, and read the Lord’s Prayer daily, for peace in the Ukrainian Land. Multiple dioceses of the ROCOR have established special appeals for donations to aid refugees and other suffering innocents in Ukraine. Those wishing to support the suffering are encouraged to give generously, by means of any of these appeals:

  • The special appeal of the Chicago and Mid-America Diocese, organised with the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Peter, can be accessed here in English and here in Russian. Funds collected in this appeal will be transferred directly to Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine, so that he can apply them to those in most urgent need.
  • The special appeal of the Diocese of Great Britain and Western Europe, organised with the blessing of His Grace Bishop Irenei, can be accessed here in English, Russian and French. This appeal accepts on-line donations from anywhere in the world, in any currency. Funds collected in this appeal will likewise be transferred directly to Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine, so that he can apply them to those in most urgent need.

Archpastoral Epistle to the Clergy and Flock of the Eastern American and Australian-New Zealand Dioceses on Great Lent and on the Events on the Holy Ukrainian Land

Dear in the Lord Brothers and Sisters:

As we approach Great Lent, this salvific time of profound prayer and self-correction, and in connection with the events in the Ukrainian land, I turn to all with a heartfelt plea: to refrain from excessive watching television, following newspapers and the internet, to close our hearts to the passions ignited by mass media, while doubling our fervent prayers for peace throughout the world, for overcoming enmity and discord, for help for the suffering, for the repose of those who have departed into the eternal life and the consolation of their friends and relatives, so that we all first and foremost remain humane and Orthodox Christians in these difficult times.

The forthcoming Great Lenten period is our path towards the Pascha of Christ. This path leads away from indolence, impatience, fuss and constant anxiety in our spiritual life, and towards wholeness, humility and love. This pious experience do not arise within us without effort, but through adhering to the other world in our churches—the world of light, joy, hope and kindness. Without participating in the divine services of Great Lent, which creates a special atmosphere in our homes and in our lives, attaining such a spiritual state is very difficult, it may even be impossible. Striving towards God, establishing peace within our hearts and participating in the sacramental life of the Church of Christ, wherein lies our personal relationship with God, we reduce the level of evil in this world, we inspire others towards labors and spiritual feats of the Gospel, we enhance peace and brotherly relationships, and do not succumb to the temptations of various discords and divisions. 

Therefore, I urge everyone to take advantage of every opportunity offered by the Church to preserve peace and goodness in our hearts, to spend this blessed time of salvation, so that we can all together meet and spend the luminous night of Pascha in unity of spirit and brotherly love, in the renewal of all of our powers and the spiritual joy in the Resurrected Christ and the victory of good over evil! Amen.

Дорогие о Господе братья и сестры!

В преддверии Великого поста, этого спасительного времени глубокой молитвы и работы над собой, и в связи с событиями в стране Украинской, обращаюсь ко всем с сердечной просьбой – воздерживаясь от чрезмерного просмотра телевидения, газет и интернета, закрывая двери своих сердец для страстей разжигаемых средствами массовой информации, усугубим горячие молитвы о мире во всем мире, о преодолении вражды и разногласий, о помощи страждущим, о упокоении отошедших в вечность и утешении оставшихся родных и близких, о том, чтобы мы все, прежде всего, оставались людьми и православными христианами в эти сложные времена.

Приближающийся Великий пост – это путешествие к Пасхе Христовой. Это путь от состояния праздности, нетерпеливости, суеты и постоянной тревоги к миру душевному, целостности, смирению и любви. Эти святые переживания возникают в нас не просто так, а от прикосновения к совсем иному миру в храме – миру света, радости, надежды и незлобия. Без участия в великопостных богослужениях, создающих особую атмосферу в наших домах и в нашей жизни, достичь такого состояния очень сложно, можно даже сказать почти невозможно. Стремясь к Богу, насаждая мир в своем сердце и участвуя в таинственной жизни Христовой Церкви, где совершается наша личная встреча с Богом, мы сокращаем зло в этом мире, воодушевляем других на труды и подвиги евангельские, способствуем миру и братским взаимоотношениям, и не поддаемся соблазнам всякого рода разногласий и разделений. 

Поэтому, хочу пожелать всем воспользоваться всеми возможностями, предлагаемыми Церковью, для хранения мира и добра в сердце, для спасительного прохождения этого благодатного времени, чтобы всем нам вместе встретить и провести светозарную ночь Пасхи в единстве духа и братолюбии, в обновлении всех сил и радости духовной о Христе Воскресшем и победе добра над злом! Аминь.

We, the bishops of the Russian Church Abroad in Europe, are following with sadness and deep concern the events unfolding in eastern Ukraine. Conflicts between peoples by force of arms invariably cause great suffering among the innocent — especially children and the elderly — and bring with them division, one-sidedness and enmity. Our Church in her prayer and ministry has long united Russians, Ukrainians, Belarusians and representatives of many other peoples, among whom she carries out her service throughout the world, regardless of state borders or political systems.

We behold with deep appreciation the profound spiritual contribution of Kievan Rus’, later Ukraine, to the Orthodox Church of Christ throughout the world. Its path has been paved by the saints, from the Equal of the Apostles, St Vladimir, who baptised Russia with water, to St Vladimir (Bogoyavlensky), who shed his blood before the Cathedral of the Dormition in Kiev. With his blood, this holy martyr baptised Rus’ anew as Russia entered into a period of atheism, uniting Russia in his heart: he was successively Metropolitan of both Moscow and St Petersburg, and finally of Kiev. This hierarch, the first-offering in the assembly of the holy New Martyrs, shows us by his fate a wondrous, divine connection. And in the same period, when the flock of the Russian Church was scattered throughout the world, Metropolitan Anthony of Kiev and Galicia, born in the region of Novgorod, ascended to the cathedra of Kharkov and then Kiev, and then carried the obedience to be the head of the Russian Church Abroad.

It is not possible to agree with the extremely one-sided picture of current events portrayed by Western sources of information. Events, we know, are much more complex. Not daring to assume the role of judges, but rather fulfilling our calling as humble servants of the Church, we earnestly pray for the appeasement of human souls ‘in the lands of Ukraine’ — for the ‘softening of hearts’; and at the same time, for wisdom to be granted to all those who are now directly responsible for the fate of the peoples in Europe, including both Ukraine and Russia, with Belarus. We lift up these petitions in a special liturgical ‘Prayer for Ukraine’, inserted in our Divine Services in the same place where once, indeed for decades, our prayer for the peoples’ liberation from atheistic power was heard.

We call on everyone — those in power and ordinary citizens — to take heed of the forthcoming Great Fast, and we cry out with the words of the Gospel: ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!’ (Matthew 4.17) , and ‘Repent, the time is near!’ (Apoc. 22.10), Temperance is required of us, not only in food and drink, but above all in sinful thoughts and passions. A sincere appeal to God will save the world from fratricide, and open the way to peaceful solutions to all our present circumstances.

Calling to mind the words of the Grand Duke, St Alexander Nevsky, ‘God is not in power, but in truth!’, we call on all the faithful to intensify their prayers ‘for the peace of the whole world’, for those who suffer, and for the conversion and salvation of the souls of all men.

May God bless and have mercy on all of us!

Мы, архиереи Русской Зарубежной Церкви в Европе, с печалью и великой озабоченностью следим за событиями на востоке Украины. Вооруженные конфликты неизменно приводят к тяжким страданиям невинных людей – прежде всего детей и престарелых – и предшествуют тому разделение, односторонность и вражда. Наша Церковь в своей молитве и служении издавна объединяет русских, украинцев, белорусов и представителей многих иных народов, среди которых она несет свое служение по всему миру, независимо от государственных границ и политических систем.

Мы видим и ценим великий духовный вклад Киевской Руси, а впоследствии и Украины, в Православную Церковь Христову по всему миру. Это путь, который проложен святыми, и ведет от св. равноапостольного Владимира, крестившего Русь водою, к святителю Владимиру (Богоявленскому), пролившего свою кровь рядом с Успенским собором в Киеве. Кровью своей этот священномученик вновь крестил Русь при наступающем богоборческом периоде на Руси. Он объединял Русь в сердце своем: был последовательно митрополитом как Московским, так и Санкт-Петербургским, так наконец и Киевским. Этот первый убитый архиерей в сонме святых Новомучеников своей судьбой являет нам дивную божественную связь. А в тот же период, когда паства Русской Церкви рассеялась по всему миру, родившийся в Новгородской области митрополит Антоний, Киевский и Галицкий, после избрания на кафедру Харьковскую и затем Киевскую, нес послушание быть главой Русской Зарубежной Церкви.

Согласиться с крайне односторонней картиной событий, как ее рисуют западные источники информации, невозможно. События гораздо сложнее. Не беря на себя роль судей, а исполняя свое призвание смиренных служителей Церкви, мы усердно молимся об умиротворении душ человеческих «в земли Украинстей» – «об умягчении сердец», вместе с тем, и об умудрении всех несущих ныне прямую ответственность за судьбы людей в Европе, объемлющей как Украину, так и Россию с Белоруссией. Отмечаем это особой литургической молитвой об Украине в том месте богослужения, где некогда, десятилетиями, звучала молитва об освобождении от богоборческой власти.

Мы призываем всех – власть имущих и простых граждан – вспомнить о наступающем Великом Посте. Призываем словами евангельскими: Покайтесь, ибо приблизилось Царство небесное! (Мф. 4, 17) Покайтесь, время близ есть!(Откр. 22, 10) Воздержание требуется не только в пище и питии, но прежде всего в греховных мыслях и страстях. Искреннее обращение к Богу спасет мир от братоубийства, откроет пути для мирных решений всех возникающих вопросов.

Памятуя слова великого князя, святого Александра Невского – «не в силе Бог, но в правде!» – призываем всех верующих усугубить молитвы «о мире всего мира», о страждущих, об обращении и спасении душ человеческих.

Господь да вразумит и помилует всех нас!

On Wednesday, 9 February, 2022, a pilgrim delegation of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, headed by His Grace Bishop Viktor of Baryshevka and His Grace Bishop Dionysy of Pereyaslavl-Khmelnitsky, visited the Synodal Residence of the First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia in New York. They were greeted by His Grace Bishop Nicholas of Manhattan, who showed them the Synodal Cathedral of Our Lady ‘of the Sign’, St Sergiuis Chapel and their sacred items.

Venerating the holy icons, the delegation was given a tour of the administrative center of the Russian Church Abroad, after which the hierarchs, clergy and pilgrims met at Bishop Nicholas’ office. During their warm and friendly conversation, Vladyka Viktor and Vladyka Dionysy and their companions shared their impressions of the parishes of the Church Abroad in San Francisco, CA, Cleveland, OH, and Pompano Beach, FL, where they had the opportunity to celebrate Divine Liturgy and spend time with the local clergy and worshipers. After sharing gifts, Vladyka Nicholas asked the visiting hierarchs to relay a deep bow to His Beatitude Metropolitan Onouphry of Kiev and All Ukraine from the First Hierarch, asking for his holy prayers and extending their best wishes for Heavenly aid in his very difficult service.

В среду, 9 февраля, паломническая делегация Украинской Православной Церкви во главе с епископами Барышевским Виктором и Переяслав-Хмельницким Дионисием посетила Синодальную резиденцию Первоиерарха Русской Зарубежной Церкви в Нью-Йорке. Здесь они были приняты епископом Манхэттенским Николаем, показавшим им Знаменский собор, Сергиево-Радонежскую нижнюю церковь и их святыни.

Поклонившись святыням, делегация осмотрела здание духовно-административного центра Русской Зарубежной Церкви, после чего состоялась беседа архипастырей, духовенства и паломников в рабочем кабинете епископа Николая. В ходе общения, прошедшего в теплой и дружественной атмосфере, Преосвященные Виктор и Дионисий и сопровождавшие их лица поделились своими впечатлениями о приходах Русской Зарубежной Церкви в Сан-Франциско, Кливленде и Помпано-Бич, в которых им удалось совершить Божественную литургию и пообщаться с духовенством и верующими. В завершение встречи, преподнося участникам встречи памятные дары, Преосвященный владыка Николай просил Преосвященных владык передать от Первоиерарха Русской Зарубежной Церкви низкий поклон Блаженнейшему митрополиту Киевскому и всея Украины Онуфрию с просьбой о святых молитвах и самыми добрыми благопожеланиями небесной помощи в его многотрудном служении.

The Kiev Theological Academy Announces an Agreement with the Pastoral School of the Diocese of Chicago and Mid-America

The Kiev Theological Academy has begun a remote lecture and consultation course for students in the United States of America. The online program is blessed by the school’s Rector, His Grace Bishop Sylvester of Belogorodsk, as part of the Cooperation Agreement with the Pastoral School of the Diocese of Chicago and Mid-America of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia.

The lectures and consultations will be held on the Zoom platform. Curating the program is Professor Archpriest Rostislav Snegirev, Assistant Rector for Foreign Students.

With the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Peter of Chicago and Mid-America, parishioners of the Russian Church Abroad participating in the Pastoral School can also participate in the program.

An open letter from Archbishop Mark to all members of the Assembly of Orthodox Bishops in Germany, regarding issues arising from the situation in Ukraine

His Eminence the Most Reverend Archbishop Mark (Arndt), Vice Chairman of the Synod of the Russian Church Outside of Russia and head of the German Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, has written an “open letter” to his fellow brothers in the Assembly of Orthodox Bishops in Germany, in which he strongly reasons against a one-sided portrayal of the events unfolding in Ukraine. Archbishop Mark points to the unbearable burden that has been placed on the canonical Ukrainian Church under the leadership of Onufriy, the Metropolitan of Kiev. Further, it is evident from this letter that political pressure is being placed on other local Orthodox churches concerning this matter.

At the same time, the head of the oldest Orthodox diocese in Germany calls for an open dialogue among the members of the Assembly of Orthodox Bishops in Germany, which has – along with the entire Orthodox Church – been deeply affected by the abuse of power exercised by the Patriarch of Constantinople.  In particular, the situation in Germany has suffered greatly.  The Church should under no circumstances be drawn into politics of civil discord and exclusion; such a path cannot bring peace among men.  Archbishop Mark also references a positive experience whereby peaceful dialogue between his diocese and the Russian Orthodox Church actively contributed to overcoming a division that once existed between them – in other words, there is a constructive met hodology of open communication that stands opposed to the methods now being employed in Ukraine, which in his view are driven by powers alien to the Orthodox Church.
