A clarification of the status of Nathaniel Kapner

It is hereby confirmed that Nathaniel Kapner (known as ‘Brother Nathaniel’) has left the auspices of the ROCOR, as announced by his correspondence with the Holy Synod of Bishops on 14 December 2025.

The Holy Synod is unaware what, if any, ecclesiastical status he may maintain, nor is it aware of what, if any, jurisdiction he has joined. As a matter of ecclesial protocol, it informs other Orthodox jurisdictions that henceforth this individual has no connection to the ROCOR and does not speak on her behalf, or with the blessing of any of her Hierarchs.

The First Hierarch and President of the Holy Synod of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia has released a cleric of its Western Rite Vicariate, the Reverend Hieromonk Patrick (Ramsey), to the Antiochian Archdiocese of the British Isles.

All sides having recognised that the false claims previously issued by the representatives of Metropolitan Jean of Doubna — to have himself ‘released’ to the Antiochian Archdiocese this cleric whom he had never canonically received and who was not under his omofor — were invalid and against Church order, and that the cleric remained a clergyman of the ROCOR, the Holy Synod of the Church Abroad and the administration of the Antiochian Archdiocese of the British Isles entered into a fraternal discussion in order to rectify the canonical anomaly and proceed forward together in the unity safeguarded by the Holy Canons.

Hieromonk Patrick, having formerly been associated with the private rebellion of a small number of clergy of the Colchester Parish in England, but having repented of his participation in the uncanonical actions undertaken by that group, was restored to good standing by the Holy Synod in light of his repentance.

Having thereafter received a letter from the Ruling Bishop of the Antiochian Archdiocese of the British Isles on 13 December 2021 expressing the desire of Hieromonk Patrick to serve within that Archdiocese, the Holy Synod, conferring with the Hierarch and cleric, issued a letter of canonical release on 14 December 2021.

Первоиерарх и Председатель Архиерейского Синода  Русской Православной Церкви Заграницей направил в Антиохийскую архиепископию Великобритании священнослужителя из викариатства западного обряда иеромонаха Патрика (Рэмси).

Все стороны признали, что ложные претензии, ранее выдвинутые представителями митрополита Дубнинского Иоанна, о том, что он сам «отпустил» в Антиохийскую архиепархию этого священнослужителя, которого он никогда не мог принять по каноническим правилам и который не находился под его омофором, были недействительными и направленными против церковного порядка, поскольку клирик оставался священнослужителем РПЦЗ. Архиерейский Синод Зарубежной Церкви и администрация Антиохийской архиепископии Великобритании вступили в братскую дискуссию, чтобы исправить каноническую аномалию и вместе продвигаться вперед в единстве, охраняемом священными канонами.

Иеромонах Патрик, ранее связанный с личным противлением небольшого числа духовенства Колчестерского прихода в Англии, но раскаявшийся в своем участии в неканонических действиях, предпринятых этой группой, был восстановлен Священным Синодом в сане, в связи в принесенным покаянием. 

Получив после этого письмо от правящего Архиерея Антиохийской архиепископии Великобритании от 13 декабря 2021 года, в котором выражается желание иеромонаха Патрика служить в этой юрисдикции, Архиерейский Синод, посовещавшись с иерархом и клириком, 14 декабря 2021 г. издал письмо о каноническом переходе.
